Pneumonia in its early stage: how to recognize it. Pneumonia is an inflammation of the lungs that can be caused by different pathogens. The symptoms, especially in the early stages, can easily be mistaken for other respiratory infections. However, there are some warning signs that can help us recognize it in time.

Respiratory symptoms of early-stage pneumonia

Persistent cough. This is not a simple cough; it is a symptom that tends to get worse over time, often accompanied by sputum (phlegm) that is yellowish or greenish in color, sometimes with traces of blood.

Difficulty breathing (dyspnea). The feeling of “air hunger” can occur both during physical activity and at rest, and it can be accompanied by wheezing.

Chest pain (pleurisy). A sharp pain in the chest that gets worse with deep breathing, coughing or movements of the chest can indicate inflammation of the pleura, the membrane that lines the lungs.

Systemic symptoms

High fever. Body temperature can exceed 38°C, often accompanied by intense chills.

General malaise. A feeling of deep fatigue, muscle weakness and widespread joint pain.

Mental confusion. Especially in older adults, pneumonia can show up as confusion, disorientation and difficulty concentrating.

Other symptoms

Night sweats. Excessive sweating during sleep.

Loss of appetite. Reduced appetite and difficulty eating.

Tachycardia. Increased heart rate.

Early-stage pneumonia: when is the right time to contact the doctor

It is really important to see a professional if you have one or more of these symptoms, especially if:

  • You belong to a risk category, such as older adults, young children or people with chronic diseases (such as heart or lung problems, diabetes or a weakened immune system).
  • The symptoms get worse quickly and significantly.
  • You have severe difficulty breathing.
  • The chest pain is intense and does not ease.
  • The fever is high and does not come down even with fever-reducing medications.

Diagnosis

The diagnosis of pneumonia is based on several factors:

  • Physical exam. The doctor listens to the lungs with a stethoscope to detect abnormal breath sounds (such as rales or crackles).
  • Chest X-ray. An essential imaging test to see the lung inflammation and confirm the diagnosis. It can be performed at the diagnostic centers of the Nefrocenter group.
  • Blood tests: analyses to check for the presence of infection (such as an increase in white blood cells, ESR or CRP). They can be performed at the laboratories of the Nefrocenter group.
  • Sputum test. An analysis to identify the pathogen responsible for the infection.
  • Other tests. In some cases, further investigations may be needed, such as a chest CT scan or a bronchoscopy.

What to know about early-stage pneumonia

The symptoms of pneumonia can vary depending on age, the patient’s general health and the type of pathogen involved. Pneumonia can be caused by bacteria, viruses or fungi. Treatment depends on the cause and can include antibiotics, antivirals or antifungal drugs. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment are essential to prevent serious complications, such as respiratory failure and sepsis.
