Complex Orthopedic Surgery

In the NefroCenter Group’s Center for Complex Orthopedic Surgery, active at the Casa di Cura Villa dei Fiori and the Casa di Salute Santa Lucia and directed by Professor Raffaele Russo, latest-generation surgical techniques and instruments are used. The team of specialists performs highly complex operations, devoted to all reconstruction and revision techniques, including cases where operations performed elsewhere have failed. The team also deals with surgical solutions for infections of previously implanted prostheses and takes an active part in scientific research in the field of orthopedics.

Shoulder Surgery

Reconstruction of the humeral head
With the Bone Block technique, developed by Prof. Russo in 2006.
Using a bone graft, artificial or taken from the patient or from the tissue bank, the loss of trabecular bone of the severely damaged humeral head is compensated. The goal is to restore the original anatomy of the humeral head. The graft is stabilized with an angular-stability plate, which allows immediate post-operative mobilization, promoting a rapid recovery of joint function.

Recurrent instability with bone loss: combined operations to stabilize the joint and reconstruct the glenoid and the humerus in cases of recurrent dislocation are performed with arthroscopic or open procedures depending on the complexity of the case.

Complex joint replacement: the team deals with the implantation of reverse or anatomical prostheses in patients with severe osteoarthritis or massive rotator cuff tears, and with revision in cases of failed prostheses. Degenerative diseases of the rotator cuff are treated arthroscopically, including with tendon and muscle transfers.

Elbow Surgery

Elbow arthroscopy: a minimally invasive technique used to diagnose and treat stiffness and impingement, remove intra-articular loose bodies and perform surgical debridement.

Treatment of epicondylitis/epitrochleitis: open or arthroscopic operations to remove the degenerated tendons.

Cubital tunnel syndrome: decompression or transposition of the ulnar nerve, often necessary for tingling and weakness in the hand.

Elbow replacement: total prosthetic replacement or radial head replacement for severe osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and fractures or their outcomes.

Tendon and ligament surgery: repair of the biceps or triceps tendon and reconstruction of the medial or lateral collateral ligament of the elbow.

Treatment of stiffness (arthrolysis): release of internal and external adhesions to restore full movement of the elbow.

Trauma: reduction and fixation of fractures or stabilization in cases of dislocation.

Knee Surgery

Complex cartilage lesions: we treat cartilage defects with techniques such as osteochondral transplantation, mosaicplasty or the implantation of biomaterials.

Multiple ligament reconstructions: we perform operations on several ligaments (ACL, PCL, collaterals) for athletes or polytrauma patients, including cases of previous failed surgery.

Complex instability: we manage chronic instability with personalized surgical techniques and an integrated post-operative physical therapy program.

Post-traumatic reconstructive surgery: management of fractures, malunited fractures or chronic infections, with a multidisciplinary approach.

Complex Joint Replacement Surgery

Revision of hip and knee prostheses: treatment of prostheses that have failed because of loosening, infection or wear. Revision operations with special implants and bone reconstruction.

Implants for severe deformities or bone loss: tailor-made solutions for complex oncological or post-traumatic cases, where bone loss requires custom implants.

Custom prostheses: thanks to 3D printing and CT reconstructions, we create fully customized prostheses for complex anatomies.

Major Trauma Surgery

Complex hip fractures: surgical treatment of articular, unstable or multiple fractures of the proximal femur, including in emergency situations, using high-precision reconstructive techniques.

Nonunion and post-traumatic infections: management of bone nonunion and chronic bone infections, with removal of implants, bone grafts and dedicated stabilization.

Reconstruction of bone defects: bone transport techniques, implantation of substitutes or biomaterials and the use of stem cells to promote regeneration.

Advanced Arthroscopy

Minimally invasive hip and knee surgery: we use arthroscopic techniques to address meniscal and ligament injuries, synovitis, hip impingement and cartilage problems, all with a less invasive approach that promotes faster recovery.

Advanced Diagnostics

High-field Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): we use state-of-the-art equipment with 1.5T and 3T magnetic fields, which allows us to obtain very high-resolution images of joints, muscles, tendons, spinal cord and spine. This is essential for the early diagnosis of injuries and inflammatory or degenerative conditions.

Multislice Computed Tomography (CT): thanks to multislice technology, we can acquire detailed three-dimensional images in a very short time, which is particularly useful for complex bone assessments, joint fractures, prostheses and pre-operative planning.

Direct digital radiography: our latest-generation X-ray system is fast and minimizes exposure to radiation. It allows real-time examinations, with high-definition images ready immediately.

High-resolution musculoskeletal ultrasound: this dynamic investigation allows us to assess muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints in real time, and is also essential for ultrasound-guided injections.

Biomechanical and movement studies: we analyze gait, load and the distribution of joint forces for a complete functional assessment, particularly useful for patients with motor disabilities, after trauma or with prostheses.

Electromyography (EMG): this neurophysiological examination helps us to assess the function of the peripheral nerves and muscles, and is essential in cases of radiculopathy, neuropathy and nerve compression, as in carpal tunnel syndrome.

Specialized clinical laboratory

We offer targeted blood tests for the investigation of rheumatic, infectious and metabolic bone diseases, such as osteoporosis, periprosthetic infections and rheumatoid arthritis.

Regenerative Medicine

Mesenchymal stem cells: we offer biological treatments aimed at stimulating the regeneration of cartilage, tendons and bone in selected patients, through a process of harvesting and autologous reinjection.

PRP – Platelet-Rich Plasma: this regenerative technique is particularly useful for tendon injuries, early joint disease and the conservative treatment of various orthopedic problems.

03 — THE GROUP

Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Team

Prof. Raffaele Russo, Extraordinary Professor of Orthopedics and Traumatology at the “Vincenzo Tiberio” Faculty of Medicine and Surgery in Campobasso, has in his curriculum 19 years as Head of Orthopedics and Traumatology at the Ospedale dei Pellegrini in Napoli, with the direction of the Emergency Department and of the Second Orthopedics Operating Unit. He is considered one of the founding fathers of shoulder and elbow surgery in Italy, with certified experience of European excellence in this field. He holds four international patents, over 100 scientific publications (Scopus h-index) and over 20,000 surgical operations.
