UroFusion, AI for the diagnosis and treatment of prostate diseases

UroFusion is the innovative ultrasound system that uses artificial intelligence for the diagnosis and treatment of prostate diseases

UroFusion is the innovative ultrasound system that uses artificial intelligence for the diagnosis and treatment of prostate diseases. A tool adopted at the Casa di Cura Santa Rita of the NefroCenter Group, at the forefront in the treatment of urological conditions. Indeed, in the increasingly advanced landscape of diagnostic imaging, UroFusion ultrasound is establishing itself as one of the most promising technologies for the diagnosis and treatment of urological conditions, in particular prostate conditions. This is thanks to the real-time fusion of ultrasound images and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), a method that provides a detailed, three-dimensional, and dynamic view of the organs, improving diagnostic accuracy and treatment planning.

What UroFusion is

UroFusion is a prime example of how artificial intelligence, robotics, and data integration are transforming modern medicine. In particular, its application in prostate diagnostics allows an approach that is less invasive, safer, and highly personalized. For patients, it means more accurate diagnoses and more effective treatments. For professionals, a reliable tool that improves the quality of clinical care. And for the future of medicine, one more step toward precision medicine.

How it works

The UroFusion system (more technically called “multimodal image fusion”) is an innovative method that integrates real-time ultrasound images with those acquired through other imaging modalities, such as multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) or computed tomography (CT). This integration is made possible by sophisticated registration and three-dimensional navigation algorithms. For example, during a prostate examination, the doctor can view at the same time the transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) and the images from a previously performed MRI. This makes it possible to overlay anatomical and functional information, obtaining a composite image of very high precision. The result is a more targeted diagnosis, more accurate biopsies, and more personalized treatments.

A leap in quality in prostate diagnosis

Prostate biopsy guided by TRUS-MRI is one of the main fields of application of UroFusion. Currently, multiparametric MRI of the prostate is the most sensitive and specific method for identifying clinically significant tumors. However, ultrasound remains irreplaceable for real-time guidance during the procedure.

Combining the two technologies allows the doctor to:

  • Precisely locate the suspicious areas identified on MRI;
  • Perform targeted biopsies, reducing the number of unnecessary samples;
  • Reduce the risk of over- or underdiagnosis;
  • Increase the clinical effectiveness of the procedure, with a positive impact also in terms of reducing side effects.

Clinical studies have shown that targeted biopsies with MRI-ultrasound fusion identify a significantly larger number of clinically relevant tumors than standard randomized biopsies.

The Virtual Navigator

One of the most advanced technological solutions in this field is the Virtual Navigator, developed by Esaote. It is a system that allows real-time fusion of CT, MRI, and PET images with ultrasound, giving the clinician a powerful and versatile tool, without the use of ionizing radiation and at a low cost.

The clinical advantages of the Virtual Navigator include:

  • Possibility of intraoperative navigation in urological procedures;
  • Real-time use for minimally invasive treatments;
  • Support in medical training through advanced simulations;
  • Extension of use to other fields such as hepatology, gynecology, and interventional oncology.

UroFusion ensures greater efficiency and less invasiveness

Integrating UroFusion into everyday urological diagnostics offers concrete advantages:

  • Reduced diagnostic time: fused images make it possible to reach a diagnosis more quickly.
  • Greater patient safety: thanks to precise localization, the risk of complications is reduced.
  • Personalized care: detailed knowledge of the anatomy allows tailored treatment strategies.
  • Support for targeted therapy: also useful in procedures such as thermoablation, brachytherapy, or drug infiltrations.
