giornata mondiale del volontariato

Today is International Volunteer Day. It was established in 1985 to celebrate those who every year give their work free of charge in the service of others. Caring for people is one of the greatest forms of volunteering there can be. Standing beside those who are sick, those who are suffering, is a gift. It is a mission for those who, in their free time, manage to dedicate hours to helping others feel well. Helping and being helped are needs that are intertwined in the lives of human beings, because they make both the giver and the receiver feel good.

The NefroCenter group has taken part in volunteer initiatives many times over the years, not only in the healthcare field. Our most recent presence was on the island of Ischia, in Casamicciola, after the landslide. We helped the “mud angels” clear the places swept away by the landslide, and in their eyes we saw all the emotion and commitment of those who wanted to restore the splendor of a wonderful place like Ischia.

This year’s theme

Every year, on December 5, International Volunteer Day has a theme. This year it is “Together, act now.” A motto to create unity and a spirit of initiative among those who give their work in favor of people in difficulty. Volunteering is also inclusion, participation and humanity, aspects that are not always found in other settings. The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, once again this year reaffirmed his closeness to the world of volunteering, describing it as essential for the Nation.

Volunteering by associations

Associations play a fundamental role in the field of volunteering. The NefroCenter group has found itself in contact many times with those who assist, free of charge, people who need it. Our group’s dialogue with the Association of Diabetics of Campania has been continuous. They provide assistance, including legal assistance, for the rights of people with diabetes, and our support for those who stand on the side of the weakest has always been high. The figures on diabetes are those of a silent war involving more and more people, partly due to wrong lifestyles that are making the population ever more ill.

Days in the squares

The NefroCenter group is proud of its days in the squares. Free of charge, twice a year, we give our work for the prevention and treatment of diabetes. We carry out free screenings for the population, with blood glucose measurement and specialist consultations. The goal is to prevent diabetes, but also to address it when the first symptoms appear, to avoid more serious complications. We care for our patients with passion, just as volunteers do, but with specific expertise.
