The Transfusion Service is an essential and non-delegable component within a complex healthcare facility, with the crucial responsibility of ensuring the availability, safety, and appropriate use of blood components (whole blood, concentrated red blood cells, fresh frozen plasma, platelet concentrates) and plasma derivatives for patients requiring transfusion therapies. Operating in close collaboration and according to the protocols of the area’s reference transfusion center (A.O. “Moscati”), the service ensures compliance with the highest national and international regulatory standards regarding immunohematological safety and quality in all phases of the transfusion process. This includes proper management of transfusion requests, adequate storage of blood components, execution of pre-transfusion tests (blood group, compatibility tests), nominative assignment of the unit to the patient, safe administration of the transfusion, and clinical monitoring of the patient during and after the procedure to detect any adverse reactions early. This service is essential to support major surgical activity, for managing hemorrhagic emergencies (trauma, gastrointestinal bleeding), and for treating patients with severe chronic anemias (thalassemias), hematological or oncological conditions undergoing chemotherapy.
