It is not just a cosmetic problem tied to your smile: it has a significant impact on quality of life, overall well-being, self-esteem and even systemic health. Despite the remarkable progress of modern dentistry, edentulism is still a common reality, especially among older people. According to the latest estimates from the World Health Organization, more than 20% of adults over 60 have no teeth at all.

What is edentulism

The term “edentulism” comes from the Latin edentulus, meaning “without teeth.” In medicine, a distinction is made between:

Partial edentulism: when one or more teeth are missing, but not the entire arch.

Total edentulism: when all the teeth of one or both arches are missing.

Contrary to what you might think, it is not only a problem for older people. Edentulism can also occur in adulthood or, although less frequently, at a young age, often as a result of trauma, severe infections or systemic diseases.

The main causes of edentulism

Edentulism can have several sources, but in most cases it is the result of chronic conditions that were neglected or not adequately treated.

Periodontitis

This is the main cause of tooth loss in adults. It is a chronic inflammation of the tissues that support the tooth, such as the gums and the alveolar bone, caused by the buildup of plaque and tartar. If it is not treated in time, periodontitis can lead to the destruction of the bone, causing teeth to become loose and fall out.

Advanced tooth decay

Deep cavities, especially when accompanied by infections such as abscesses, can irreversibly damage the structure of the tooth. In these cases, extraction of the tooth becomes inevitable.

Dental trauma

Accidents, falls, sports without proper protection or assaults can cause a tooth to fracture or to be avulsed (that is, to come out completely).

Systemic diseases

Conditions such as diabetes, osteoporosis, some forms of cancer, cancer therapies (in particular chemotherapy and radiation therapy to the head and neck) and the prolonged use of medications that reduce saliva production can compromise oral health and promote tooth loss.

Genetic factors

In some cases, edentulism can be linked to congenital malformations (such as dental agenesis, that is, teeth that never developed) or to a hereditary predisposition to developing periodontal disease.

Poor oral hygiene

Not brushing your teeth properly, skipping regular dental checkups or not treating infections promptly can have serious consequences in the long term.

Smoking and alcohol

Smoking is a well-known risk factor for periodontitis and slows down healing processes. Alcohol, especially when combined with a nutrient-poor diet, can worsen oral health

The consequences of edentulism

Besides affecting appearance, tooth loss can have serious effects on several aspects of life, including functional, psychological and physiological ones.

Impaired chewing: without teeth, food is not chewed properly, which can increase the risk of digestive problems.

Changes in the temporomandibular joint: the lack of dental support can cause jaw pain and persistent headaches.

Speech problems: some sounds and letters, such as “f,” “s” and “t,” may be pronounced incorrectly.

Bone resorption (atrophy): the upper and lower jawbone, no longer stimulated by chewing, tends to recede over time, leading to premature aging of the face and a loss of support for the lips and cheeks.

Social difficulties: embarrassment about smiling or speaking can lead to social isolation and lower self-esteem.

The remedies

Edentulism, if diagnosed in time, can be treated successfully. Several treatment options are available, and the choice depends on the number of missing teeth, the quality of the bone and the patient’s general health.

Removable dentures

This is the most traditional solution. Dentures can be complete (for the entire arch) or partial. They are low-cost, but they require a certain adjustment period, they can be unstable and they often do not prevent bone atrophy.

Fixed bridges on natural teeth

These are anchored to the teeth next to the missing one. They are a good option for partial edentulism, but they require filing down healthy teeth and do not stop the loss of the underlying bone.

Dental implants

Currently, this is the most advanced solution. Titanium implants replace the natural roots and are placed directly in the bone, offering stability, durability and bone stimulation. Crowns, bridges or fixed prostheses are then mounted on them.

Zygomatic implants

For patients with severe bone atrophy, when the upper jawbone is not sufficient for traditional implants, zygomatic implants are used, which are anchored to the zygomatic bone (the cheekbone). This is an innovative solution, reserved for specialized centers and maxillofacial surgeons.

Bone grafts and regeneration

If the bone is insufficient, autologous bone grafts or grafts from biomaterials can be used to rebuild the foundation needed for implants. Today there are also guided bone regeneration (GBR) techniques.

All of these treatments are performed, depending on the patient’s condition, at the Dental RAH of the Rome American Hospital of the Nefrocenter group.

Prevention is the first step

The most effective strategy for fighting edentulism is prevention itself. There are some simple but effective practices for keeping your teeth and gums in excellent shape:

Brush your teeth at least twice a day using a toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.

Don’t forget to floss every day.

Have a professional cleaning at the dentist every 6 to 12 months.

Deal with cavities and gum disease as soon as they appear.

Avoid smoking and follow a diet rich in calcium, vitamin D and antioxidants.

Have regular checkups to spot any problems before they become serious.

Join our Open Day and get back to smiling
July 10 – Rome American Hospital – Dental Open Day

Edentulism is a clinical condition that involves the partial or total loss of natural teeth.
