It can be simple or complex and can affect different parts of the heart, such as the valves, the septa, the blood vessels and the heart chambers. The main types are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Atrial septal defect (ASD):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a hole between the two atria of the heart.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Ventricular septal defect (VSD):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a hole between the two ventricles of the heart.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Atrioventricular canal defect (AVCD):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a large opening between the two atria and the two ventricles of the heart.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a combination of four heart defects.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Transposition of the great arteries (TGA):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the two main arteries of the heart are connected to the wrong ventricle.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Symptoms of congenital heart disease<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The symptoms of congenital heart disease can vary depending on the severity of the malformation and the age of the patient. In some cases the symptoms are evident at birth, while in others they may appear later in life. They are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Cyanosis (a bluish color of the skin)<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Difficulty breathing<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Fatigue<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Chest pain<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Fainting<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Diagnosis<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The diagnosis is made by a cardiologist. It is important to see a specialist. At <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rah.it\">Rome American Hospital<\/a> checkup visits can be done in both the pediatrics department and the cardiology department. The equipment available at the hospital of the <a href=\"\/en\/\">Nefrocenter<\/a> group also makes it possible to check for any heart problems through a latest-generation CT angiography.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Tests to have<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tests to have for the diagnosis and monitoring of congenital heart disease may include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cardiac ultrasound<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"\/en\/electrocardiogram-what-it-is-for-and-how-it-is-performed\/\">Electrocardiogram <\/a>(ECG)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chest X-ray<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Color Doppler echocardiogram<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cardiac computed tomography (CT)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Treatment and care<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment and care depend on the severity of the malformation and the age of the patient. In some cases the malformation can be corrected with surgery. In others, medications or other palliative treatments are needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Congenital Heart Disease Day<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Congenital Heart Disease Day is observed every year on February 14. The goal of this day is to raise public awareness of this condition and its implications.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Statistics<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Italy, it is estimated that about 4,000 children are born each year with a congenital heart disease. Thanks to advances in medicine, the survival of these children has increased considerably in recent years.
