Pneumonia in its early stage: how to recognize it. Pneumonia is an inflammation of the lungs that can be caused by different pathogens. The symptoms, especially in the early stages, can easily be mistaken for other respiratory infections. However, there are some warning signs that can help us recognize it in time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Respiratory symptoms of early-stage pneumonia<\/span><\/h2>\n

Persistent cough<\/strong>. This is not a simple cough; it is a symptom that tends to get worse over time, often accompanied by sputum (phlegm) that is yellowish or greenish in color, sometimes with traces of blood.<\/span><\/p>\n

Difficulty breathing (dyspnea)<\/strong>. The feeling of “air hunger” can occur both during physical activity and at rest, and it can be accompanied by wheezing.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chest pain (pleurisy)<\/strong>. A sharp pain in the chest that gets worse with deep breathing, coughing or movements of the chest can indicate inflammation of the pleura, the membrane that lines the lungs.<\/span><\/p>\n

Systemic symptoms<\/span><\/h3>\n

High fever<\/strong>. Body temperature can exceed 38\u00b0C, often accompanied by intense chills.<\/span><\/p>\n

General malaise<\/strong>. A feeling of deep fatigue, muscle weakness and widespread joint pain.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mental confusion<\/strong>. Especially in older adults, pneumonia can show up as confusion, disorientation and difficulty concentrating.<\/span><\/p>\n

Other symptoms<\/span><\/h3>\n

Night sweats<\/strong>. Excessive sweating during sleep.<\/span><\/p>\n

Loss of appetite<\/strong>. Reduced appetite and difficulty eating.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tachycardia<\/strong>. Increased heart rate.<\/span><\/p>\n
