Diabetology is the medical specialty that deals with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diabetes mellitus (Type 1, Type 2, and gestational) and all its acute and chronic complications. Being a chronic and systemic condition, diabetes requires a multidisciplinary approach and constant monitoring to ensure a good quality of life for the patient and prevent long-term damage to vital organs such as kidneys, eyes, heart, nerves, and blood vessels. The patient’s journey includes regular diabetological check-ups, therapeutic education for self-management (diet, physical activity, blood glucose monitoring), key blood tests such as blood glucose measurement and glycated hemoglobin, and specific tests for early diagnosis of complications (microalbuminuria, fundus examination, neuropathy testing). The most modern therapies are used, including insulin pumps and glucose sensors.
